Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections – Is this the Holy Grail of Medicine
Jonathan Hersch, M.D. { Orthopaedic Associates USA }
The majority of what we see in sports medicine is sprains and strains of muscles, ligaments and tendons and in some cases ruptures of these structures that may require surgery. We have been looking for solutions to these problems that can help heal tissue and not just reduce symptoms like anti-inflammatory medication. There has been a recent increase in interest and use of an injectable material called Platelet Rich Plasma for orthopaedic sports injuries.
Platelet rich plasma is derived from a patients own blood. A small blood sample is taken and the platelets are separated from the rest of the blood cells.
Platelets are an important part of our body’s ability to heal tissue. What they do real well is produce a multitude of growth factors. These growth factors can aid the healing of muscles, tendons and ligaments.
PRP injections can be performed as an office procedure. Common ailments being treated with great success include tennis and golfers elbow, rotator cuff tendonitis , Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and patella/quadriceps tendonitis (jumpers’ knee) Many research studies have concluded that treatment with injections for these conditions can be curative and with results as good as surgery with much less risk.
In surgery for tendon repairs (i.e. rotator cuff, Achilles tendon) and ligament reconstructions (ACL) PRP is being used to enhance healing of these structures. In addition research is showing patients are recovering faster with better motion and return to normal activity.
Biological solutions to many sport medicine problems is exciting and new technology that is being used today in the office and surgical settings. If you suffer from any of these problems PRP injections may be a treatment option for you.
